Founded in 1914 as a dock and wineries of a livestock company, the city of Puerto Aysén is located 1,625 km. south of Santiago de Chile and 67 kms. northwest of Coyhaique. It is located on the banks of the Aysén River, becoming the point of concentration of activities related to services throughout the insular territory.
Only 15 kms. Puerto Chacabuco is the main port and point of entry to the Aysén Region by sea; From this place, all the boats that go to Laguna San Rafael, the main tourist attraction of this region, set sail.
This forms part of the Laguna San Rafael National Park, which has an area of 1,742,000 hectares. Declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1979 by UNESCO, it is one of the most imposing beauties of Chile, where a gigantic glacier empties with ice floes around it; Visitors can see the great spectacle that comes with the release of its eternal ice, from small boats arranged with the necessary security.
On the other hand, there are other places close to the city, also important tourist centers in the area, among which are the Presidente Ibáñez Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Chile with 210 meters. of length, which links Coyhaique with Puerto Chacabuco. The Cerro Mirador Park is another attraction and from it you can get a view of the city and surroundings. There is also the Artisan Galley, located on the south side of the Presidente Ibáñez Bridge, where you can find samples of regional crafts, mainly wool, wood and leather.
You can also visit the El Mallin Forest Nursery, the Riesco Lake, the Simpson River National Park, located 32 kms. of Aysén; the Five Sisters Natural Monument, which is made up of six small islands that together cover an area of 228 hectares, 50 kms. at the entrance of the Aysén Fjord.

How to get there: It can be accessed from Balmaceda Airport, which is 55 kms away. southeast of Coyhaique. Also from the Teniente Vidal Aerodrome which is 7 kms. southwest of Coyhaique. By land, it is accessed by the Carretera Austral, both from the north (Puerto Montt) and from the south of Chile (Cochrane). In Barco you can access by Puerto Chacabuco, the main port of the region, located 82 kms. northeast of Coyhaique.
